For a long time now DD has suffered with sore legs where the wrap seems to dig in to her legs.  I was hoping that the next size up would help with this, but it hasn’t noticeably changed anything.  The other night her bottom was incredibly sore, although the nappy didn’t seem any more wet than normal.  The only way we have managed to combat this is to have alot of nappy -free time, lots of cream, and using disposables at night.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what might be going on here?  I haven’t changed washing powders recently.  Well I change between Bio-D and Ecover non-bio depending on what I can get my hands on at the time, but that has been the “normal” for quite a while now.

Could babe be teething? I foudn this made both my DDs wee markedly more acidic than normal… this could cause soreness, and chaffing etc…. Hope baby feeling better soon… I used petroleum free jelly on both my babes bottoms, as soon as dribbling and irritatbility started, as I knew I was due for some ‘paint stripper pee’

Are you using PUL wraps? Grace has a problem with the bindings on PUL wraps, so we use fleece ones as the elastic is kind of encased in the fleece. That’s really helped with soreness around where the wrap meets the legs - her’s used to come up like welts, but she rarely has problems with the fleece ones - only when teething, and then only in the bottom area, never round the legs any more.

Ammonia or detergent build up can cause irritaion so you could try soaking the nappies in a bucket of water with a bottle of white vinegar before washing them. Poppy was getting sore rings around her legs and side of her bum, but ok where the fleece liner was touching. I cut some larger fleece liners and treated the nappies for build up and it was all fine again. I now religiously rinse cycle them before the wash (always 60 deg - this prob occurred after I tried just doing 40 deg if the nappies weren’t pooey.) I don’t tend to add vinegar to the softener drawer as this can cause irritation as the acidic vinegar is not always completely rinsed out.

Use wool shorties at night? Roo wears a minki huggle at night (boosted) and I have made him some merino shorties to wear over them. Works a treat and because the shorties aren’t getting much ‘wear’ (as in running around etc) they need lanolising a lot less often than daytime woolies do. The he just wears a short sleeved T-shirt on top if it is hot and L/S if it is cooler, babygrow if it is cold.

I’d dito the fleece wraps if you would prefer convenience as they don’t need lanolising like wool but work in the same way, another alternative would be fleece soakers which pull on like wool shorties.  The advantage fleece has is that it can be washed more frequently than wool, though neither have a smell problem.

As others have said you could try strip washing the nappies, also using at least half the suggested detergent helps in the prevention of buildup and I’ve found buildup happens even with eco detergents and ended up using ecoballs for the nappies which worked just as well and with the hard water that I have to live with they help to keep my nappies softer (or did whilst LO was wearing them).

Hope this helps

Fleece liners and wool cover every time! The fleece liner will kepp the inside feeling dryer, and the woll nappy cover is totally soft around the legs, and also allows the nappy to breathe. This allows evaporaton, and cools the inside temperature by up to 2ÂșC. This should help reduce soreness in itself

We had this a bit too. The only way to minimise it was to change very frequently, including the wrap. (I agree that using fleece or wool wraps might be a good idea)

When she was about 18months I bought some pocket nappies/stuffables and that stopped the problem completely.

I’l probably use pocket nappies much sooner, from about 6 months, with future babies.
