crunchy nappies… how can I soften them

I am now away with washable nappies (thanks for all the help earlier).  I have just been passed some old bamboozles for my little one to grow in to. They are clean and unstained but are very crunchy.  I did an extra rinse when I was given them and tumble dried them (boo hiss!) as was told it would soften them, but they came out of the tumble drier crunchy.

I know that they work, but I like the idea of soft nappies…

Any suggestions? Even if I buy new nappies, these will do as a back up when things just are not drying fast enough in the winter.

You could try washing with no detergent and adding a cup of white vinager to the rinse cycle.  I’ve been told by many of my customers that this has helped especially as I live in a hard water area.  I’ve also found that hanging on an outside line on a windy day helped.

I’ll be doing this myself with the cotton nappies I own when the time comes to use them again.

They may have detergent build up so soak them overnight in a bucket a water and plenty of white vinegar, then wash with no detergent and more vinegar in the softener drawer.

Wash them with a half and half mix of soda crystals and washing powder and then rinse with bicarb in the rinse cycle, finish with second rinse of white vinegar and dry on the line. If they’re still a bit stiff, sort of rumple them all before you fold them.

THanks everyone!  I have a bit of time as they are the large size nappies and little one is only 12 lb at almost 6 months….
