bluensm’s recent question about swim nappies reminded me that I was going to look into getting a couple for when LO makes an appearance. However, I don’t know anything about these, what to look for, what types are better than others, what types need disposable inserts and which don’t, when waterproof really means waterproof, etc etc. When I tried to do some research online, I just ended up more confused than before! Any info would be really helpful!!

I have a first size one you can borrow - it’s lovely, padded enough inside to hold about one wee. By the time you need bigger, grace will be out of her current one. Can’t remember the brand of the first size one, but I got it at the boots nearest you if you want more than one. Her Cyrene one is an imse venes one and is also pretty good.

Hi
there are 2 main types- disposables- from supermarkets, even some pools sell them (VERY expensive, and obviously not “green”) and washables- Mothercare, second-hand, online.
the point of them is not to catch wee- swimming pools filter and chemical the water so they are not worried about it- but they don’t want poo in the pool (poo in the water means the pool must be closed for 2-12 hours depending on their cleaning system, so they get rather upset about it!)so whatever nappy you choose needs to be reasonably tight around the legs/ waist so nothing “escapes”, I used ones with elasticated legs but found they were either too tight or too loose, personally I prefered the ones with velcro tabs so I could adjust them.
Also, obvious I guess, but some people don’t realise- if your baby does poo in the nappy, it will be trapped in the nappy- but not for long, so change them straight away!- speaking as an ex-lifeguard, it is not fun standing on poolside with a fishing net trying to catch the floating bits for half-an-hour!!!!

The first size one I have is a bambinex one - it’s lovely and cosy with a drawstring waist and elasticated legs - like little padded pants really. I prefer them to the Velcro and tie-waisted ones as it means that *I* don’t get covered in wee when we go to the beach!

I think the washables are down to personal preference though in honesty - they all do the job of containing poo, so it’s down to you and what you can buy/borrow/get hold of!

Have dug out Grace’s old one - it’s green, so fairly unisex!
