What’s in season this month

The month of January is the perfect time to enjoy our seasonal root veg in the UK; leeks, parsnips, turnips, Jerusalem artichokes and celeriac. Other tasty veg to be had includes green cabbage, shallots, sprouts and mushrooms. Which has got me thinking about a hearty family roast or a vegetable bake in a creamy sauce with a nutty crumble topping.

This month at your local farmer’s market you should also be able to find British grown fruit and veg that has been stored through the colder months. Think apples and pears, potatoes and beets.
Forced rhubarb with be raising it’s pretty pink head by the end of the month. Carrots should still be available, either from storage in sheds or still in the ground. Onions are the same and are available most of the year round. Happy seasonal cooking!
