Rachel Parsonage and Lorna Mitchell are the co-founders of Noughty and old school friends. The team met in the 1980’s when sun-in highlights, tight perms and frizzy fringes were all the rage and now run one of the leading natural haircare brands.

“Rachel was a sports fanatic and hockey team hero while I was the nerdy deputy head girl. Despite our clear differences, we shared the same family values and work ethic from a very early age, were in the same close circle of friends, and spent time outside of the classroom doing our best to put the world to rights. Fast forward 15 years to London, and having taken quite different routes into beauty, we reconnected through our shared values, experiences and passion for natural products. Today, with our connected history and skills that complement each other, we both believe it’s a privilege to be able to work together.

Growing up together, Rachel and I learnt from a young age that good hair and skin can make or break how you feel about yourself. Creating a natural product range that led to a good hair day every day, as well as a healthy scalp no matter what your hair type, became our first priority. We believe everyone has a right to good hair, so wanted to offer the high performance of premium brands but at a sensible price, passing on as much value as we could afford, to our customers, whilst also reflecting the strength of our shared values. Having both been lucky enough, to work for founders of some of the most renowned beauty brands on the UK High street, we also had shared learnings to draw on. Noughty was born.

SELF-CARE SECRETS

Self-care means so many different things to different people. My personal approach is simple but holistic.

- Make time and space to work on yourself, for yourself.

- Set realistic goals with practices that define your own self-care in a practical way.

- Develop daily habits or stress relief rituals, as techniques and tools for improved wellness.

A long relaxing soak in the bath can be the cure for many things! The Class by Taryn Toomey is my personal commitment to self-development. It is “a transformative workout of the body and mind”. Whilst the practice happens on a mat, “through simple, repetitive calisthenics and plyometrics”, the Class challenges the body to fully engage the mind.

I also spend at least one minute each day (and often closer to 30) tapping, twisting and shaking the body to clear areas of stagnation as defined by Katie Brindle’s Hay’ou method.

BUSINESS PLANS

We are constantly evolving our brand and ethos by listening carefully to our customers wants, needs and desires, making sure we respond to them wherever possible but communicating transparently where it isn’t possible. We genuinely care about delivering high performance products at an accessible price, so we invest heavily in innovation, with lots of exciting product development in the pipeline including a new category launch coming later this year. Our sustainability journey remains imperative to our future so we are continually evaluating our strategy and opportunities to improve in terms of both packaging and formulation. We also have new routes to market in work so lots more Noughtiness to come.

THREE WAYS TO BE MORE SUSTAINABLE

A) Make truly informed purchasing choices that protect and support the needs, health and safety of community, environment and planet

B) Extend recycling beyond the kitchen, into the bathroom and even further into composting

C) Amplify the message: Find recognised, knowledgeable non-profit organisations in your area that promote sustainability, join them, and educate in their message to your network via family, friends, support groups and forums.
