What festive season is complete without a glass of mulled wine? Done properly, a glass of mulled wine feels quite medicinal and it warms from the inside out. Make a flask for a winter walk or an evening of star-gazing. Gather round a fire with a glass and you'll soon find festive cheer restored. Depending on the weather, this is a warming drink to enjoy from November through to March! It's incredible easy to rustle up a batch and tastes a whole lot better than the pre-made stuff you can buy.

There’s no need to buy expensive wine either – it tastes just as good with a cheap bottle. Experiment with the ingredients until you find the perfect combination for your tastes. Enjoy!
Ingredients
1 bottle red wine
1 tsp cloves
½ carton of orange juice
Splash of brandy (optional)
2 cinnamon sticks
1tsp all spice
1 very small knob of fresh ginger, grated
Grated zest of 1 lemon
1 tbsp sugar
Heat all the ingredients in a heavy-bottomed pan, but don’t allow to boil. Simmer gently for 5 minutes and then take off the heat. You can strain the mulled wine using a sieve or muslin but we tend to do this just with the glass we’re drinking at the time to allow the rest of the concoction to carry on percolating nicely. Serve with a mince pie or two. For best results, enjoy by a roaring log fire.
