I was a journalist and campaigner for children’s rights but I’ve always been interested in health and the environment. Living in Somerset seemed like a perfect opportunity to put those interests into practice. We bought a house with a walled garden; one autumn morning I was standing in the herb bed, the aromas were wonderful, the air was clear, the leaves shiny, the birds twittering and I thought, “Everyone deserves this bit of bliss. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to bottle it.” So I tried and Little Herbs (littleherbs.co.uk) was born.

SELF-CARE SECRETS

I’m very keen on the idea of taking responsibility for my own health and well-being - by eating foods that suit my system, trying to get enough exercise (always a struggle!), getting Bowen treatment or acupuncture, or consulting my medical herbalist if something is amiss. I’m not at all opposed to conventional medicine but it has its limitations, like all forms of medicine.

I avoid processed foods: they’re certainly unhealthy but actually I don’t like them. Every time I try something because it’s convenient or quick, or alluring in some way, I always end up knowing that it would have been just as quick and easy to make an omelette or a ham and cheese sandwich - and a darn sight nicer!

I do some gentle Tai Chi every day which helps keep body and mind in some sort of balance: I hope.

BUSINESS PLANS

Like everyone in business I’d like it to be more successful so that’s the aim; through better social media presence and getting in-store. Covid-19 is going to have massive repercussions: I think people will be more careful in what they buy because there will be less cash to splash. People will be looking for high quality and that’s what we at Little Herbs can offer.

THREE WAYS TO BE MORE SUSTAINABLE

Do your research and think.

Think about what you consume.

Grow and cook your own food with your friends and family: it’s what real life is all about.
