Important year for climate

2010, now officially the most important year for our climate, ever. And all because world leaders did not seal the right climate deal in Copenhagen. At the end of this year, they will try again, in Mexico. So where are we now?

Well, existing greenhouse gas reduction pledges will not halt emissions growth until 2040, 35 years after the 2015 target called for by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. By 2020 global emissions from all sources would be some 55 billion tonnes, up from around 46 billion tonnes today.

Without dwelling on the disaster that was Copenhagen, it’s important to hear from someone who was in the room when the non-deal was being done, how the youth of the world reacted, then for us all to take action.

Here we go …
• Mark Lynas writes a fly-on-the-wall account of how talks failed. He was in the room.

• What the youth think.

• Challenge world leaders. Reduce your emissions by 10% in 2010 … join 10:10.

• Help defend our friends from those who helped Copenhagen fail.

And finally … What Dr. Seuss would have thought.

Let’s make this month count.
