Green Amsterdam

With its canals, narrow cobbled alleys and trams, Amsterdam is an exciting place to explore as a family. Puppet theatres, urban farms and play parks make the city even more appealing to children.

Rough Guide have just published the tenth edition of their guide to this vibrant, exciting city and it has a whole section dedicated to Amsterdam for Children. They recommend starting off with a canal trip to get your bearings, although a ride on a canal bike sounds even more fun and these pedalo style vessels can be picked up and dropped off at many depots.

Continue the self-powered transport theme and hire a bike – Rough Guide recommend Bike City at Bloemgracht. Cycle to Vondelpark for a cup of tea and a rest while younger members of the family swing, climb and paddle. In the summertime the park hosts an open-air theatre which puts on free entertainment for children. At Amsterdamse Bos, visitors can explore playgrounds, lakes and a nature reserve with bison and sheep.

As well as the campsite at Amsterdamse Bos, there are a number of camping opportunities on the outskirts of Amsterdam – the site at Zeeburg offers kayak and bike rental and is on the tram route, just outside the city.

It is easy to get to Amsterdam without flying. World train travel specialist, The Man in Seat 61 has recommendations for both ferry and train travel.
