Children love the idea of finding, decorating and keeping a pet rock – why not help them to select just the specimen to start or add to a pet rock family?

Another pretty way to decorate smooth pebbles is to paint repetitive mandala patterns onto them – there are no rules and each rock ends up being a unique piece of moveable art.

YOU WILL NEED

  • Flat, smooth pebbles – any size will do but larger ones are better for patterns
  • Paint pens or paint pots and brushes
  • Self-adhesive googly eyes to give a pet rock personality (leave at home and add later if easier)

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Wait for pebbles to be bone dry before working on them and give them a quick wipe to remove any sand particles
  2. Paint directly onto the pebbles and allow them to dry between colour and pattern applications
  3. Allow to dry and finish off with eyes or sequins at home.

TIPS - Paints can be fiddly to use at the beach – try correction fluid pens for a monochrome look. Look for pebbles with smooth and flat surfaces rather than domed specimens which are much more difficult to work on. Prevent painted pebble projects from fading over time by giving them a once over with spraypaint varnish (available at hardware stores) – it makes colours appear punchier too.
